The Haymarket and Horsefair before Lewis's store was built on the big open site in the background. The 1950s opened with F. W. Woolworth still rebuilding the large stores destroyed in the blitz. 

 

At the end of the war there were higher priorities for building materials and labour in the larger cities, rebuilding schools, hospitals and other public buildings. By 1948 resources started to become available and building work could start.
